8 Posing Tips for your Next Photoshoot

It wasn't until I stood in front of the camera that I realized how awkward and uncomfortable it feels to stand there... Especially if you are standing in a public place, with strangers staring; curious to see what you will do next.

It's nice, behind the camera, maybe that's why I like it. There is no pressure to have the perfect hair, the perfect makeup, the perfect outfit, or the PERFECT POSE!

In this post I will be taking one less stress away by sharing my top 8 posing tips to practice for your next photoshoot!

TIP #1: STAND TALL

Yes! All those years of perfecting your posture is finally paying off! Stretch out your core and separate your limbs from your body! Use your curves or practice creating some by putting your weight on the side that is leaning more towards the camera.

TIP #2 USE PROPS

Looks like I'm standing in time out on the photo to the left, huh? WELL, don't just stand there, do something! Always bring props or use what is around you! Think about the theme of your image and what you would do if you were just naturally in that environment.

I imagined this was a garden in a spanish back yard and I was picking flowers to take home with me! Create a story in your image.

TIP #3 DON'T ACTUALLY WALK

To avoid taking thousands of photos of a natural walk... Take 2 steps foward and 2 steps back while semi tip-toeing. Repeat. AND ask your photographer to shoot from a lower angle aiming slightly upwards.

TIP #4 LET GO OF YOUR HAIR

For the love of Photography! Don't let me catch you holding your hair. lol. If you have ever shot with me, you know this drives me crazy.

When you don't know what to do, play with your hands or just pretend to tie a little bow just below your chest, in front of your abdomen.

TIP #5 FACIAL EXPRESSIONS

Everyone has a good side, or a side they prefer to face the camera, right?

Practice your facials in the mirror every morning, so that when you are in front of the camera it's almost instant. Relax your lips just slightly open to remove any creasing around your mouth.

TIP #6 LOOK AWAY

You don't always have to look at the camera directly. Walk away from it and face the other way. Pretend someone is calling your attention just to the right or the left of the camera.

TIP #7 TURN AT A 45 DEGREE ANGLE

Stand straight, directly in front of the camera, and then turn your torso at just a 45 degree angle. Make sure to separate your chin from your shoulders and show off your neck.

Keep your face looking straight at the camera with your chin forward and tilted down.

TIP #8 TRY ALL ANGLES

I took 8 different images in the same spot! Try different angles and perspectives.

You might see something that your photographer doesn't and vice versa. Take close up shots and farther full body shots.

Don't stress if you don't get the results you want right away! Ask your photographer to show you the images so that you can critique your own posing and adjust with every different shot or angle!
